According to the Swiss commercial registration database Zefix, the American company JUUL is preparing to establish a presence in Zug, Switzerland, specializing in producing USB flash drive-shaped electronic cigarettes.

On Thursday (October 4), Handelszeitung reported this news. The Swiss commercial registration database lists Juul Labs' Swiss subsidiary as a manufacturer, distributor, or exporter of electronic cigarettes and accessories, allowing it to engage in retail and wholesale trade.

According to the entry information from September 24, this Swiss subsidiary of the California-based group is managed by Jacob Bollag.

The German-language newspaper stated that JUUL submitted a trademark registration to the federal government in April this year.

According to Bloomberg, this San Francisco-based company was founded in 2015 and is led by Kevin Burns, with a valuation of $15 billion and recently completed a $1.2 billion financing round. JUUL has captured 68% of the U.S. e-cigarette market.

Currently, Swiss law states that nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes are not subject to the same restrictions as traditional cigarettes. However, pending new legislation will classify electronic cigarettes as tobacco products, prohibiting their sale or promotion to minors under 18.

Many electronic cigarette manufacturers and retailers in Switzerland have voluntarily signed a ban on selling e-cigarettes to minors before the relevant regulations come into effect.

Across the Atlantic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cracking down on e-cigarettes.

On Tuesday (October 2), the FDA stated that during a surprise inspection of JUUL, it seized over a thousand pages of documents related to the company's sales and marketing.

In September, the regulatory agency indicated that it was considering a ban on JUUL and other companies producing flavored e-cigarettes to combat the rising trend of e-cigarette use among teenagers.

Reuters cited a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing that from 2016 to 2017, JUUL's retail sales grew more than sevenfold.

The CDC's research also found that JUUL accounted for nearly one-third of e-cigarette sales in the U.S.
