China E-Cigarette News: Following Japan Tobacco’s announcement that it would acquire leading British e-cigarette manufacturer E-Lites, the vaping market has drawn increased attention. As of the close of U.S. trading on the 17th, Altria Group, which is involved in vaping-related business, was up about 9% for the year, while Lorillard Tobacco had risen more than 20% year to date. Over the same period, the S&P 500 Index gained slightly more than 5%. The United States is also considering mandatory product standards for e-cigarettes to further protect public health. With the regulatory framework expected to improve further, the vaping market is likely to enter a more orderly stage of development. Recently, according to a report released by Research and Markets, U.S. e-cigarette sales are expected to expand at an annual rate of 24.2% through 2018. Meanwhile, global e-cigarette sales this year are expected to reach US$1.5 billion to US$2.0 billion. In recent years, as the domestic market has gradually opened up, estimates suggest that China’s e-cigarette market could reach RMB 30 billion. Domestic manufacturers are also gradually shifting from export OEM production to independent R&D, producing products with higher hygiene and safety standards.

The basic structure of an e-cigarette includes a stainless steel outer shell, a lithium battery component, an atomizer, and a mouthpiece (cartridge). Among China’s listed companies, EVE Energy has transitioned from being the largest dedicated supplier of lithium batteries for e-cigarettes to becoming an e-cigarette manufacturer. Dongfeng Co. and Shanghai Green New have also entered the e-cigarette sector by establishing joint-venture project companies.
