A few years ago, after President Peng of China Tobacco Hubei took office, the previously struggling Huanghelou brand suddenly rose in the market and surged ahead. From 1916, the first sky-high-priced cigarette openly sold at 3,000 yuan per carton, to the 10,000-yuan commemorative cigarette for QH’s centennial celebration, to the Sea-Land-Air series built around a military theme, and even blatantly promotional “career-boosting” cigarettes, the brand could be said to have walked a razor’s edge the whole way.
