What are the ingredients in vape e-liquid, and how is it made? As vaping becomes increasingly popular, it has led to a surge in interest regarding the core of vaping—e-liquid. More and more consumers using vaping products have questions about the production process of e-liquid: how is this ingredient produced? Is the quality and safety guaranteed? Does the production process meet standards?

Last year, before launching the "Search for the Best E-Liquid in China" campaign, we conducted extensive sampling of the e-liquid from Jirui Electronic Cigarettes and found the flavor to be quite good, which prompted the campaign, but we hadn’t visited the production facility. Now, in response to the many concerns consumers have about the production of e-liquid, we conducted an investigative report on Jirui Electronic Cigarettes to see how they produce their e-liquid.

I remember last year, I initially thought that the production technology and conditions of e-liquid companies were not mature, but what I saw in Jirui Electronic Cigarettes' production facility completely overturned that perception. I discovered that Jirui Electronic Cigarettes has a modern GMP-standardized production workshop, equipped with six medium-sized stainless steel mixing tanks for batch blending and thorough mixing of e-liquid, and multiple semi-automatic precision filling machines that can accurately output to 0.5ml.

At the same time, the use of multiple fully automatic labeling machines, integrated shrink wrap and heat shrink equipment, and fully automatic boxing machines keeps production efficiency at a very high level, while the company’s comprehensive quality control monitoring system ensures that products can only leave the warehouse after passing inspection, showcasing a strong sense of technology throughout the production process.

During the investigation, we also observed an interesting phenomenon: in the large e-liquid production workshop, workers were diligently cleaning e-liquid bottles.

"Every batch of packaging materials needs to be cleaned and disinfected, especially glass bottles. We soak the bottle body, droppers, and caps—materials that come into direct contact with the e-liquid—in alcohol, then rinse with pure water, repeating twice until water droplets do not cling to the walls, achieving cleanliness, disinfection, and removal of industrial oil stains," said a staff member.

"After cleaning, we use a high-pressure air gun with pure gas to remove moisture (high-temperature baking can cause water droplets to adhere inside the bottle)."

Jirui Electronic Cigarettes' approach undoubtedly dispelled previous concerns regarding hygiene in the e-liquid production process.

"During the use of electronic cigarettes, e-liquid comes into contact with relevant human tissues, so the production of e-liquid products must have a strict and comprehensive quality control system; otherwise, it would be irresponsible to the health of users of this product!" said Mr. Li, the head of e-liquid at Jirui Electronic Cigarettes, when discussing the production philosophy of e-liquid.

Raw material procurement is a key aspect of the e-liquid production process. From the staff at this e-liquid company, we learned that they strictly control product quality through five stages: raw material procurement system, packaging material cleaning system, production manufacturing system, inspection system, and shipping. First, raw materials undergo mandatory testing, requiring that 16 types of plasticizers (phthalates) must not be detected, and substances such as diethylene glycol, butanone, pentanone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and glyoxal must not be detected. Additionally, components banned by both FDA and TPD must also not be detected, ensuring that raw materials meet the requirements of various countries.

Regarding consumer concerns about the presence of substandard e-liquids flooding the market, the workshop manager also addressed this issue.

"We will not have this phenomenon. We have an advanced quality testing system that uses Agilent gas chromatography to conduct detailed analysis of raw materials and finished products, monitoring the total bacterial count in e-liquid to ensure its health and safety," said the staff member.

"Additionally, to maintain consistent flavor across each batch of e-liquid, we also test the acidity and alkalinity of the e-liquid to ensure its pH balance and stability, preventing discoloration and flavor changes; we keep samples from each production batch to ensure that the flavor remains consistent for every shipment!"

It is understood that before shipping, Jirui Electronic Cigarettes also has an inspection stage, and products can only be released to the market after passing all inspections.

Through this investigation, we gained a deeper understanding of the e-liquid production process.
