Is Switching to Vaping Devices for Smoking Cessation Really ‘Adding More Poison’?

Today, I read an article discussing how researchers found harmful substances in the liquid and vapor inside e-cigarette smoke chambers, such as lead, chromium, nickel, and even arsenic. This study aims to accurately quantify the metal exposure caused by e-cigarette use and its impact on human health, promoting the regulation of these toxic chemicals. On the surface, this article seems to urge the e-cigarette industry to further regulate and ensure the health of all vapers, but I cannot agree with the title of this article!
The title of the article "Is Switching to E-Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation Really 'Adding More Poison'?" and its content are filled with sensationalism, making those who want to switch to a healthier alternative hesitant. However, after reading the article "Are You Still Relying on E-Cigarettes to Quit Smoking? This is Poison on Poison, Stop Now!", I found that the researchers only studied the metals that might diffuse into the e-liquid from the heated coils, causing vapers to inhale them (and they used heated solutions for their research). The purpose of the study is to hope that their findings will encourage the FDA to regulate the potential presence of chemicals in e-cigarettes. Essentially, this research is aimed at promoting the healthy development of vaping, not to discourage people from using this method to quit smoking!
Speaking of heated coils, they are the heating wires and atomizer cores we need when using vape devices. The main types currently are A1 wire (main components: chromium, aluminum, iron, nickel), nickel-chromium alloy wire (main components: nickel, chromium), pure nickel alloy (Ni200), titanium wire (pure titanium alloy wire), and stainless steel wire (SS).The discussion about whether heating wires are harmful to the human body has been ongoing for a long time, and many vapers are concerned about this issue. Some say nickel wire is dangerous, as it can generate high-risk tetravalent nickel carbonyl compounds when reduced by carbon monoxide at 200°C. However, nickel carbonyl can also decompose back into nickel during the 150-250 degree process, and since this process does not involve combustion, carbon monoxide is not produced. But the generation of nickel carbonyl is quite difficult, and we generally cannot reach that standard. For vapers worried about the temperature of heating wires, it is not easy to calculate the temperature when using vape devices, as many factors influence it (the oil content in the cotton, the amount of oil soaked, etc., can all affect the temperature; if the cotton is soaked with a lot of oil, the temperature of the heating wire will be slightly higher than room temperature. If dry burning occurs, the ignition time and power will also vary the temperature). However, you can choose to use the temperature control mode on regulated boxes.
As mentioned in the article I read, if researchers find that using heated solutions to vaporize metal coils may produce toxic metals, then should we also stop using frying pans? Of course, we cannot rule out that some low-quality heating wires may contain impurities. Therefore, we conducted experiments using some wires, excluding single-component cotton and simpler e-liquids, only dry burning the heating wires. We found that most heating wires did not produce impurities after dry burning, and only a very small number of heating wires produced black impurities after dry burning. To avoid this situation, we still recommend purchasing higher-quality heating wires to ensure a safer experience.
Numerous studies have shown that using e-cigarettes is a healthier choice, especially for those looking to quit smoking. Although some studies have found potential negative impacts, it is precisely these negative effects that can drive the e-cigarette industry forward, allowing more users to experience this healthy and fashionable lifestyle!
I hope that in the future, such sensational article titles will decrease, allowing those who want to experience this new way of life to have a better and clearer understanding.
