"Do electronic cigarettes help smokers quit or merely glamorize a potentially unhealthy habit?" Public health experts are divided on this issue, but a new study provides the first substantive evidence that for some people, these devices may be less harmful than previously thought.

This article, published in the journal "Addictive Behaviors," examines how smoking cessation patterns in the U.S. have changed since the introduction of electronic cigarettes in 2010. Electronic cigarettes vaporize liquid nicotine instead of burning tobacco and producing tar.

What users inhale is the water vapor produced by the e-liquid, which typically contains trace amounts of nicotine (the primary addictive component of cigarettes). For more information on e-liquid components, please see: Are e-cigarettes harmful to the body?

The First Substantive Evidence That E-Cigarettes Can Help People Quit Smoking

The nicotine content in e-liquids can be controlled. Once a regular smoker receives a sufficient dose of nicotine, they no longer need to obtain nicotine from cigarettes. This avoids the absorption of various harmful substances produced by burning cigarettes! Cigarettes can produce over 4,000 harmful substances when burned, including tar and nitrosamines, which are highly carcinogenic.

But how do you know how much nicotine is a sufficient dose?

The nicotine content in e-liquids is generally measured in mg/ml. For example, 3mg/ml means there are 3mg of nicotine per milliliter of e-liquid. If a cigarette contains 1mg of nicotine, you would need to vape 0.33ml of e-liquid to obtain the same nicotine content as one cigarette. Here’s a comparison of nicotine doses between e-cigarettes and cigarettes:

With normal use, a person can vape about 3ml of e-liquid in a day. If you smoke a pack of cigarettes, vaping 6mg of nicotine from e-liquid would be roughly sufficient. The goal is to gradually reduce the dose to achieve cessation.

Once you obtain enough nicotine from e-cigarettes, the physical craving is alleviated. Generally, those who want to quit smoking will no longer crave cigarettes.

In addition to physical cravings, there are also psychological cravings (or habits), which are not too difficult to manage. Try to avoid smoking environments and refrain from buying cigarettes. The key is to change your lifestyle to avoid triggers!

You can definitely quit smoking! Some may say that they quit smoking but then switched to e-cigarettes. That’s okay; the nicotine content in e-cigarettes can be controlled and gradually reduced. From 6mg to 3mg to 0mg, you can achieve this within 2 to 3 months.

Currently, most people who quit smoking do so using these two steps simultaneously. We call this "nicotine replacement therapy," where e-cigarettes provide nicotine while reducing the intake of nicotine over time. Generally, within two to three months, the body no longer needs nicotine. You can throw away or pass on both e-cigarettes and cigarettes to those who need them.

This avoids the risk of relapse due to physical cravings. Many friends say e-cigarettes are ineffective for quitting smoking, which is often due to incorrect nicotine content choices, leading to no sensation. They still crave cigarettes. I experienced this myself; initially, no one told me about these details, and I bought 0mg e-liquid online and vaped for over a month without success. It wasn’t until a fellow vaper educated me that I realized I hadn’t met my needs... Fortunately, I later found the right method to quit.

Medical reports indicate that a puff of smoke contains 4 billion particles of fine dust and hundreds of compounds, including dozens of toxins and carcinogens. Therefore, smoking in public places and indoors poses significant risks. If one person in a household smokes, everyone in that household, regardless of age, becomes a "passive smoker."

For your health and the health of your family and friends, please quit smoking as soon as possible!

Researchers from Columbia University and Rutgers University analyzed two years of annual household survey data and examined two groups: current smokers and former smokers who quit before or around the time electronic cigarettes were introduced.

Among approximately 15,500 adults studied, those who reported using e-cigarettes daily were more likely to quit traditional cigarettes than those who had never tried e-cigarettes. In fact, over the past five years, more than half of daily e-cigarette users have quit smoking, compared to only 28% of those who had never tried to quit.

In other words, the strongest predictor of someone quitting smoking in the survey was daily e-cigarette use.

Daniel Giovenco, an assistant professor of social and behavioral sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the lead author of the study, stated: "Our findings suggest that regular e-cigarette use may play an important role in smoking cessation or relapse prevention for some smokers. This study builds on previous observational research suggesting that e-cigarettes can help smokers quit. A large study published last July in the BMJ involving over 160,000 people over 15 years indicated that smokers using e-cigarettes not only attempted to quit more frequently but also succeeded (for at least a few months) more often than those who did not use them.

Nevertheless, these studies are observational and have limitations. Since observational studies focus on populations and their behaviors over time, it is difficult to determine whether other confounding factors influenced the results. It is also worth noting that this study did not address whether e-cigarettes attract those who would not otherwise smoke.
