Vape Clapton Coils vs Regular Wire: Which Tastes Better?

Once users move beyond the beginner stage, many start trying DIY builds, and coil building becomes a key part of that. But building coils is not as simple as it seems. Many newer users still want to pursue Clapton-style coils, believing they deliver bette
Once vapers progress to advanced levels, they generally start DIY projects, with a focus on coil building. However, coil building is not that simple; it requires a certain level of skill. Many beginners still pursue fancy coils, believing that they provide better flavor than regular wire. Whether for tank or dripper setups, single or dual coils, fancy wire has become the preferred material. Which tastes better: fancy wire or regular wire?

There are many types of fancy wire, and the belief that "fancy wire affects the fineness of vapor and provides better flavor" is subjective. I usually avoid discussing variable issues, so I will skip that! I will only discuss the major categories.

I think we need to fundamentally understand the advantages of fancy wire compared to regular wire and why fancy wire has largely replaced regular wire.

Simply put, the fundamental role of fancy wire is to have a larger heating area than regular wire at the same resistance, and the densely wrapped outer wire on fancy wire further enhances heat transfer. Higher heating efficiency means more e-liquid is vaporized, resulting in denser vapor and a stronger flavor experience. Which tastes better: fancy wire or regular wire In our previous article on the best flavor formula, we mentioned the basic formula of "heating area + airflow matching". Here, I need to extend that point:

Even with airflow completely closed, the atomizer can never achieve a true vacuum, which means there will always be air present in the atomization area.

Using fancy wire, the increased vapor production helps fill the atomization area, reducing the proportion of air.

However, this does not mean that regular wire is completely obsolete. If the goal is merely to increase the heating area, regular wire can also be made into "dual parallel" configurations, and there are also "flat wires" available. Of course, aside from the advantage of heating area, fancy wire's multi-strand outer wire can also enhance the richness of e-liquid vaporization, but this comes at the cost of reduced flavor clarity. For example, if you add too much sugar to an espresso, it becomes overly sweet, and fancy wire can lead to flavor fatigue, which many vapers can relate to.

To this day, while fancy wire has its excellent characteristics and occupies a significant share of the e-cigarette market, it cannot replace the mouth-to-lung experience provided by high-resistance regular wire.

The O atomizer is a standard 22mm atomizer designed to support both regular and fancy wire, so we can use it as a simple example: O atomizer

Internally, the electrode deck of the O atomizer nearly maximizes the atomization space. In other words, it minimizes the atomization area. Many factors affect the atomization space, from screws to the position of cotton, all of which impact the occupancy of the atomization area. The mouth-to-lung data requires high resistance and low power, resulting in minimal vapor production, and since the atomizer cannot achieve a complete vacuum, there will still be air present in the atomization area even when airflow is fully closed. Effectively minimizing the atomization space also aims to reduce the proportion of air in the internal space, allowing vapor to occupy the atomization space fully. The choice of e-liquid is also crucial when selecting heating wire; e-liquids suitable for mouth-to-lung atomizers typically have lower VG content, such as the increasingly popular nicotine salt e-liquids, which do not require high thermal efficiency for vaporization. Incorrectly pairing vapor-type e-liquids with regular wire can lead to a lack of flavor.
Which tastes better: fancy wire or regular wire From the examples above, we can see the advantages of regular wire in mouth-to-lung data, and we can summarize two points regarding the role of regular wire in mouth-to-lung atomizers.

First: The structural issue of mouth-to-lung atomizers results in a small atomization area.

Second: E-liquids suitable for mouth-to-lung atomizers generally have lower VG content, such as the rapidly growing nicotine salt e-liquids.

Is fancy wire dominant? Is regular wire on the decline? --- Not necessarily.

So whether to use regular wire or fancy wire depends on individual preferences and needs; ultimately, the choice lies in what you prefer or the characteristics of the e-liquid and atomizer you are using.
