IML (In-Mold Labeling) is a classification of IMD (In-Mold Decoration) technology. It involves printing patterns on a film using ink screen printing, cutting the shape and inner holes, and placing it into an injection mold cavity for injection molding, where the molten resin combines with the film to form a solid product.
The main processes include the following aspects:
1. Material Cutting: Cutting the roll of film into square pieces of designed dimensions for printing and forming use;
2. Flat Printing: Creating a film screen based on the required icons and text, and printing them on the cut film squares;
3. Ink Drying and Fixing: The printed film is placed in a high-temperature oven to dry and fix the IML ink;
4. Protective Film Application: To avoid smudging the printed film surface during the hole punching process;
5. Thermoforming: Heating the printed film and forming it using a high-pressure machine or copper mold in a preheated state;
6. Cutting: Trimming the waste from the formed three-dimensional film;
7. Material Injection: Placing the formed film and a film that matches the front mold's three-dimensional shape into the front mold to inject the IML finished product.
The finished product structure consists of a layer of hardened transparent film on the surface, a printed layer in the middle, and a plastic layer at the back. The ink is sandwiched in the middle, preventing the surface from being scratched and providing abrasion resistance. IML products can have single-sided and double-sided films, with single-sided films consisting of three layers (film layer, ink layer, plastic layer) and double-sided films consisting of five layers (film layer, ink layer, plastic layer, ink layer, film layer).
