How Many Watts Is Suitable for a Vaping Device?

How many watts are suitable for a vaping device? Many beginners enjoy producing large clouds of vapor after starting with e-cigarettes. So, how many watts do you need for big vapor? The power of the e-cigarette battery directly affects the size of the vapor and also impacts the flavor experience and subsequent practice of blowing rings. Especially for players who pursue changes in flavor, they often experiment with different coil data and adjust various wattages to find their preferred taste.

Therefore, I believe that for many new e-cigarette users, before learning how to blow rings or how to coil, the first thing to master is adjusting the wattage.

To adjust the wattage effectively, one must first understand the basic physics of e-cigarettes.

Basic Knowledge of E-Cigarettes

The basic principle of e-cigarettes is a simple circuit where the battery provides power to deliver current, and the atomizer acts as the electrical device. The heating coil (atomizing core) inside the atomizer serves as the resistance. E-cigarettes utilize the battery's electrical energy to heat the resistance wire, causing the e-liquid on the cotton on both sides to evaporate into vapor, creating a smoke-like effect.

E-cigarettes use batteries as a power source to provide voltage. In the industry, the standard voltage for e-cigarette batteries is 3.7V, while the maximum voltage when fully charged is around 4.2V. As usage time increases, the voltage will gradually decrease. Therefore, we can find our preferred flavor within the voltage range that the battery can withstand.

To do this, we also need to understand some common electrical variables involved in e-cigarettes: voltage (U), current (I), resistance (R), and power (W).

To be frank, if you don't understand this basic physics knowledge well, it will be difficult to enjoy vaping. So for those who skimmed over this, please go back and take a closer look!

New users of e-cigarettes often struggle to set the appropriate wattage when using adjustable devices, making it hard to find the wattage that suits their taste. They may set the wattage too high, causing a burnt taste and throat irritation, or too low, resulting in insufficient vaporization of the e-liquid and a lack of experience.

Below, I will introduce two methods for adjusting wattage that you can use as a reference:

Formula Method

This calculation method originated in the mechanical mod era, where early mechanical mods did not have any parameter prompts or protective mechanisms. Therefore, to use mechanical mods safely, one needed to perform theoretical calculations to determine the appropriate power and other parameters.

So when we know the resistance of the atomizing core and the voltage, we can use the formula to calculate the suitable power for the current resistance:

Power = Voltage squared / Resistance (W = U² / R)

Common e-cigarette power is generally within 100W; anything above 100W can directly use a mechanical mod. Therefore, in many cases, the wattage of e-cigarettes generally follows:

17 / Resistance = Wattage

Observation Method

Currently produced adjustable box mods typically come with chips that can detect real-time output voltage. After installing the atomizer, the device will detect the resistance of the atomizer and adjust the wattage accordingly, allowing you to observe real-time changes in output voltage.

You just need to adjust the wattage to—

Output voltage 3.7V - 4.2V

Within this voltage range, adjust freely to find your preferred flavor.

The methods have been introduced, and here are some wattage adjustment data for e-cigarettes that you can try:

1. Resistance 0.6Ω, power above 25 watts;

2. For a resistance of about 1.2-1.6, use the wattage calculated from 17 / Resistance;

3. Different wires, different diameters, and different methods will yield significantly different resistances, and the methods for producing large vapor will vary. For common 0.4 wire, using dual coils with a diameter of 3 and 6 wraps, the resistance is around 0.40, then use 28-30W; using a single coil with a diameter of 3 and 6 wraps, the resistance is around 0.80, then use 15-17W.

4. 1.2 resistance—50W-70W;

5. 1.6 resistance—35W-45W;

6. For 0.5 or 0.6 resistance, use 25-28 watts.
How many watts are suitable for e-cigarettesIt is important to note that the wattage you choose to push depends not only on the ohm value, wire diameter, and thickness but also on the type of atomizer you pair it with. If your atomizer cannot handle sufficient current, you will end up with a burnt taste.
Finally, some people prefer high resistance and high power, some prefer low resistance and low power, while others like low resistance and high power. Some even use fancy heating wires with lower resistance, which may cause throat irritation due to the dense vapor, leading them to choose lower wattage settings.

There is no fixed wattage for e-cigarettes; it should be set based on your flavor experience. The same resistance may suit different wattages for different people. Therefore, there are no strict rules.
