According to the Brussels Times, Belgium has banned smoking and vaping indoors and outdoors at train stations starting January 1, 2023.

The ban will apply to all 550 train stations in Belgium, and violators will face fines. Ashtrays on platforms will be removed, and visible signs will indicate the prohibition.

“Our children have the right to grow up healthy, including not being exposed to tobacco. As children see fewer and fewer people smoking, a tobacco-free environment is becoming their new normal,” said Mark Michiels, spokesperson for the Smoke-Free Generation. “The Smoke-Free Generation welcomes this measure, which brings us closer to the first generation of non-smokers.”

“Belgium has 14,000 tobacco victims each year—this should prompt us to take action,” said Georges Gilkinet, Federal Minister of Transport. The ban will “ensure healthier air on platforms and, most importantly, relieve the pressure on young people who have already quit or want to quit smoking.”
