The Global Battle of Heated Tobacco Brands

IQOS may lead today’s heated tobacco market, but it was not the first. This article looks at the global competition among heated tobacco brands and the category’s early history.

Today, we know that heated non-burning e-cigarettes are likely to become the next outlet in the tobacco industry. We also know that IQOS is popular in more than 30 countries around the world. We also know that IQOS has led the trend of heated non-burning e-cigarettes, but in fact IQOS is not the first one born. Heated non-burning e-cigarettes.

Premier, the world's first heated non-burning tobacco product, was born in 1988 and was developed by Renault Tobacco Company of the United States. Ten years later, in 1998, tobacco giant Philip Morris International launched the Accord, a heated non-burning smoking device, using an electric heating model.

As an international tobacco giant, Philip Morris was preparing for many years to release its first heated non-burning e-cigarette IQOS in 2014. When it was launched in Japan in June 2014, it quickly shook the position of traditional cigarettes in the international market. Since then, a new era of global heated non-burning e-cigarettes has been opened.

Let me first explain.& ldquo; Heating non-burning cigarettes is different from e-cigarettes, which use electronic devices to heat tobacco oil and inhale it after atomization. It uses electronic devices to heat tobacco raw materials and inhale it after smoking. What is roasted is real tobacco, not nicotine oil.

This new type of tobacco products still belongs to the category of cigarettes, but by using electronic smoking equipment to smoke, the heating temperature can be accurately controlled to about 300 degrees to avoid burning, thereby controlling the smoke components released and greatly reducing the production of harmful substances.

Despite the resistance of China's regulatory measures, foreign new types of heated and unburned tobacco have not yet been able to invade the China market with great fanfare, which has also given domestic tobacco companies time to grow.

In recent years, major breakthroughs have also been made in the research and development of such products in China, including many outstanding ones. The battle between domestic and foreign heating and non-burning e-cigarette brands is imminent.

The following small editor will give you an inventory of the powerful brands at home and abroad that have officially joined this battle of heating but not burning!

Let's first look at international market brands

As the founder of the heating and non-burning category, IQOS is already a well-known international brand. With the support of Philip Morris International, the world's largest tobacco company, and the endorsement of the Marlboro brand, IQOS is destined to become a leader in this field. It has always been imitated, but has never been truly surpassed. IQOS has currently entered 30 countries including Japan, Italy, South Korea, and Ukraine.

IQOS's heating device adopts a ceramic heating plate structure with split heating: the heating rod and the heating chamber are separated. Each cigarette you smoke requires 4 minutes to recharge to reduce the amount of smoking users. This design concept has always been controversial. It is a shortcoming and an advantage. This depends on whether the user's own needs are simple and enjoyable, or whether he hopes to find a balance between enjoyment and health.

IQOS's exclusive cigarette bombs mainly have three brands: Marlboro, HEETS, and Paramount. Brother Frog introduced the version and price of the cigarette bomb in more detail in the article "IQOS Cigarette Bomb Analysis, Taking You to Understand Heating Without Burning Cigarette Bomb".

LIL

LIL is a product developed and marketed by KT G, South Korea's largest tobacco product manufacturer and the fifth largest in the world. It is also South Korea's first heated non-combustible product. Whether it is background strength or brand awareness, LIL can be said to be one of IQOS's strong rivals in the international market.

LIL's smoke machine is relatively small in shape, adopting a round heating column structure and an integrated design. In terms of design concept, LIL can draw about 20 cigarettes in a row, which is very different from IQOS. LIL has its own exclusive cigarette bomb FIIT, which of course also adapts to Marlboro, Paramount, and HEETS (IQOS's exclusive cigarette bomb).

GLO

Glo is a heating non-burning equipment developed and marketed by another world tobacco giant British American Tobacco (BAT). It was launched globally in Japan in December 2016. In addition, British American Tobacco has also launched the heated non-combustible cigarette Glo in Switzerland and Canada in April and May 2017 respectively.

Overall, as British American Tobacco plans to expand the sales of heated non-combustible cigarette Glo to about 20 countries by the end of 2018, its global layout will closely follow IQOS.

It is worth mentioning that before Glo was launched in Japan, IQOS had just been promoted nationwide in Japan and achieved immediate results. The number of smokers in Japan is as high as 20 million, and Japanese consumers are very keen to try new products and technologies. Therefore, since 2016, Japan has become a battleground for the power of major heated non-burning e-cigarette brands.

Glo also has its own dedicated cigarette bomb Dunhill, but its shape is completely different from that of LIL and IQOS, so it cannot match each other. Glo sells for about 600 RMB.

Let's take a look at the domestic heating and non-burning brands

Sichuan China Tobacco Kungfu-Wide and Wide Series

Speaking of Sichuan China Tobacco, we must first mention Kung Fu, which was launched in South Korea at the end of last year. At the same time, Kung Fu is also the first heating non-combustible brand in China to be listed overseas. Kung Fu is the heating non-combustible brand of Sichuan China Tobacco. Along with Kung Fu smoking equipment, there is also the wide and narrow (bullet) cigarette bomb developed by Sichuan China Tobacco, which should be regarded as the China Tobacco company with the strongest heating non-combustible strength in China.

The Kungfu-Wide Narrow Heating Non-Burning product produced by Sichuan Tobacco was first trial-sold in Seoul with a price of 4300 won. Smoking sets are currently sold on domestic e-commerce platforms such as Jingdong and Tmall.

Yunnan China Tobacco MC Series

Yunnan China Tobacco was established in 2003 and is currently the largest provincial-level China Tobacco Industrial Company in China. On April 16, 2018, Yunnan Tobacco International Co., Ltd. and South Korea IF Tobacco Co., Ltd. signed a distribution agreement for MC brand low-temperature heating non-combustible cigarettes in Kunming, marking that Yunnan China Tobacco's first batch of low-temperature heating non-combustible cigarette trial products officially entered the Korean market.

Guangdong China Tobacco MU+/ING series

Guangdong China Tobacco is also the third China Tobacco company in China to launch heated non-burning tobacco products after Sichuan China Tobacco and Yunnan China Tobacco. The first market is in Laos. It is understood that the new tobacco products MU+ and ING are the first set of products successfully launched by Guangdong China Tobacco after nearly five years of technical reserves and continuous research and development.

The first products on the market include two heating appliances, as well as Chinese-style tangerine peel and mint flavor cigarettes. They have rich smoke aroma and high smoking comfort. They adapt to different consumer needs and have strong product competitiveness. As Guangdong Tobacco's first new tobacco product, the initial sales of MU+ and ING in Laos are only the first step. As the products continue to be iterated and updated, this series of products will attract more and more consumers 'attention.
