Vaping on a Plane? You Could Be Prosecuted

A passenger was prosecuted after vaping in an airplane lavatory triggered the smoke alarm mid-flight. The case serves as a warning that vaping on planes can lead to legal consequences.

A South Korean man recently smoked an e-cigarette in the bathroom of a flight from Busan, South Korea, to Kaohsiung Airport, triggering the smoke alarm and causing a false alarm. After the flight landed, the flight attendants reported the incident to the authorities.

On April 24, the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office prosecuted this South Korean man for violating civil aviation laws.

The prosecution stated that the South Korean man, surnamed Yo, was aware that once the aircraft doors were closed, it was prohibited to use any devices that could interfere with flight or communication. However, he still violated civil aviation regulations by smoking an e-cigarette in the aircraft bathroom around 12:41 PM, causing the smoke alarm to trigger. The flight attendants discovered this and reported it after landing at Kaohsiung Airport.

The involved South Korean man admitted to his offense during police questioning, and on the 24th, the prosecution concluded the investigation and prosecuted him for violating civil aviation laws.

Using e-cigarettes on an airplane can release vapor, which can easily cause panic among other passengers and disrupt order in the aircraft cabin, affecting normal flight operations. Additionally, the aircraft cabin is a confined space, and using e-cigarettes poses a significant threat to flight safety in the event of an electronic ignition or fire. Therefore, using e-cigarettes in the aircraft cabin is absolutely prohibited. "One cigarette" may seem trivial, but national property and the safety of people's lives are not trivial matters. The law is not a joke; "do not commit small evils" and maintain the bottom line of being a person. It is crucial to be a law-abiding citizen and not make foolish decisions that could lead to lifelong regrets due to a momentary craving for a cigarette or a "whim."
